IMPOSSIBLE HARMONY TELLS The story of the jerusalem youth chorus - and why it matters now

Founded in 2012, The Jerusalem Youth Chorus (JYC) is an Israeli-Palestinian music and dialogue project raising voices of peace and justice from the streets of Jerusalem to the global stages of TED and America’s Got Talent. These young leaders have continued to meet even through the darkest moments of violence, and their commitment to each other, and the power of their voices raised in harmony, has only grown.

IMPOSSIBLE HARMONY is the story of this remarkable ensemble and its singers - not just as a spark of hope and inspiration but as a model and toolkit for readers looking to bring more harmony to their own communities and a world on fire.

about the author

Micah Hendler is a musical bridge-builder working at the intersection of singing, dialogue, and social change. Over two decades, he has pioneered a methodology for cultivating community across conflict — a toolkit he has put into practice not only through creating the Jerusalem Youth Chorus and navigating it successfully through more than a dozen years of escalating violence, but also with multiple organizations working across America’s many divides, including Braver Angels, the One America Movement, the Constructive Dialogue Institute, and Convergence. A TED Speaker, Forbes 30 Under 30 list-maker, and Sounds of US Fellow, he is a frequent keynote presenter, using participatory musical keynotes to kick off conversation in fora as diverse as Forbes Under30 Summits, Chorus America, NEXUS Global, the Central Conferences of American Rabbis and Cantors, the East-West Philosopher’s Conference, and Pluralism in Action.

A Yale graduate with degrees in Music and International Studies, Micah has studied Community Singing and CircleSinging with GRAMMY-winning composers and has been engaged in dialogue work for more than 20 years. He has written extensively for Forbes on music and social change, highlighting voices not often given the mic or the pen.

Impossible Harmony distills the toolkit he has developed across continents and conflicts — and offers proof that it works — to anyone seeking to bridge divides through the transformative power of music and authentic human connection.
